What is a leather sofa and which leathers are there?

Not all leather is the same. The leather you choose determines the look, the feel and the service life of your sofa. Aniline leather (top-grain) is the highest quality: dyed right through, retaining the natural pore structure, and it develops a beautiful patina over the years. Buffalo leather is sturdy and thick, with striking back seams and a pronounced hide texture, full of character and durable. Cowhide is the most widely used, in countless finishes, and is extremely durable in daily use. Pull-up leather gives a vintage look in which slight colour differences appear under pressure and use, which actually hides wear beautifully. The Africa leather from Het Anker is 1.4 mm thick, aniline and dyed right through, developed for a lifetime of durability.

Sizing advice: choosing shape and size

Just as with a fabric sofa, you choose your leather sofa mainly on shape and size. Leather corner sofas give maximum seating comfort and fill a corner of the room naturally. Leather straight sofas come as 2-seaters, 3-seaters and 4-seaters. For a generous living room, leather XL sofas offer extra length. A leather lounge sofa is deeper and lower for cocooning, often with a chaise longue. And the classic chesterfield with its buttoned look stays timelessly elegant. Measure the free wall space and the walkways in advance, so the sofa keeps breathing room in the space.

Colours and finish

The colour determines how the sofa lands in your interior. Cognac is warm and full of character and suits almost every interior style. Brown leather runs from light honey to deep espresso. Anthracite and black are sleek and modern, perfect for an industrial or rugged interior. Natural and sand are light and inviting and suit Scandinavian design. Caramel and hazelnut give warm earthy tones. Many leather sofas can also be configured in size, leather and colour, so your model fits your space exactly. Request a leather sample with no obligation to judge the colour at home, under your own light.

Care: how to keep your leather sofa beautiful for decades

Leather needs minimal care. Dust the sofa regularly with a slightly damp cloth. Treat the leather once or twice a year with leather grease or leather balm suited to your leather to keep it supple. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, although aniline leather may take some sun because it then develops a rich patina. Rub stains dry immediately with a clean, dry cloth, do not rub them in. If you are unsure which product suits your leather, our advisers are happy to give you a personal care tip.

What else goes with a leather sofa?

A leather sofa comes into its own best with the right surrounding furniture. Combine it with a mango wood or suar wood coffee table for a warm contrast, and with a leather armchair as a statement piece for extra variation in texture. Place the sofa against a light wall for maximum contrast and finish the seating area with a floor lamp and home accessories. That way you build a living room step by step in which the leather sofa is the point of calm.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a leather sofa last?

A quality leather sofa from a maker such as Het Anker lasts 25 years or more with normal use. Aniline and buffalo leather actually get more beautiful over the years thanks to patina, while cheap split leather with a PU coating usually lasts 5 to 10 years before the coating cracks.

What is the difference between aniline leather and pigmented leather?

Aniline leather is dyed right through without an opaque coating: warm, breathable, with a visible pore structure, and it develops a beautiful patina. Pigmented leather has an opaque lacquer layer that makes it more resistant to stains, but it is less breathable and less natural.

Does a leather sofa fade in the sun?

Bright direct sunlight can cause colour fading, especially with light colours and pigmented leather. Aniline leather may have some sun exposure because that actually strengthens the patina. Preferably do not place the sofa right in front of a large south facing window.

How do I remove stains and scratches from leather?

Rub stains dry immediately with a clean, dry cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a leather cleaner suited to your leather. Light scratches can often be rubbed away with a damp finger or a drop of leather balm, while deeper scratches need professional repair.

Can I have a leather sofa made to measure?

Yes, many models can be configured in size, leather and colour. That way you create a sofa that fits your space and interior exactly. Request a leather sample with no obligation to judge the colour at home first.

What warranty do I get on a leather sofa?

Two years warranty applies as standard. On Het Anker you get a lifetime construction warranty on the frame and the mechanism. Our advisers will explain all the warranty conditions clearly before you choose.
