What is a 3-seater sofa and which size should you choose?
A 3-seater sofa comfortably seats three people and is often the centrepiece of the seating area. As standard a 3-seater is around 200 to 240 cm wide, with a seat depth of roughly 90 to 110 cm. If you want more room, choose an extended version of 240 to 260 cm. Allow around 60 to 70 cm of seating width per person. For a 3-seater sofa a living room from around 18 m² is generally fine; if the room is smaller, a 2.5-seater or a loveseat is a better fit.
Fabric, leather or velvet?
The upholstery sets the mood and the ease of use. Choose a fabric sofa for soft comfort, a velvet sofa for a luxurious look, or a leather sofa for timeless character. Corduroy and bouclé are popular, contemporary weaves with plenty of texture. Leather and microfibre are the most practical to look after, because stains wipe away easily. Velvet is luxurious but a little more sensitive, so bear that in mind with heavy use.

Torn between sizes? A 2.5-seater sofa is around 180 to 200 cm wide and suits two adults plus a child. A 3-seater of 200 to 240 cm seats three adults. If space is tight but you still want a generous seat, the 2.5-seater is an attractive middle ground.
Care and lifespan
With the right care a 3-seater sofa lasts a long time. Vacuum a fabric sofa regularly and treat stains straight away. Leather stays attractive with a periodic nourishing treatment. If you go for velvet, be a little more careful with stains and blot them immediately. A sturdy frame with good springing and filling keeps the comfort at the right level for years.
