What a sideboard is and which material suits you

A sideboard is wide and usually 75 to 90 cm high, which means it fits under a TV, an artwork or a mirror while still holding plenty. The wood determines the look. Mango wood is warm brown, affordable and sustainable. Oak is timeless in light or dark and lasts for generations. Teak is rich in oils and moisture resistant. Suar wood has a dramatic, marble-like figure as a tropical hardwood. For a rugged look there are industrial sideboards with black metal, and for a modern, sleek feel there are high gloss models in white or black. The difference with a buffet cabinet: that is taller and often has display sections with glass doors, while a sideboard is low and versatile in placement.

Sizing advice: which width for your space

Choose the width to suit your space and your use. Allow at least 80 cm of clear wall or space. Compact (140 to 160 cm) fits a small dining room or hallway, often with a couple of doors and drawers. Standard (160 to 180 cm) offers plenty of storage and is the most chosen size for a dining room of 12 to 18 m². Spacious (200 to 220 cm) is a statement in a larger living room, and the XL version (240 cm and up) works along a long wall or in an open space. If you are placing the piece under a TV, choose a sideboard that is 30 to 40 cm wider than the screen. Our advisers are happy to do a floor plan check with you.

Layout: drawers, doors or a combination

The layout determines how practical your sideboard is. A sideboard with only drawers is handy for crockery, cutlery and smaller items. A sideboard with only doors offers maximum room for larger items. The most versatile choice is a combination of drawers and doors, which lets you store things in an organised way. Models with open compartments leave room for books or a visible decorative accent. In terms of style it runs from industrial with black metal handles, through sleek modern with push-to-open, to warm country with classic handles and calm japandi in light wood.

Caring for a wooden sideboard

Solid wood stays beautiful with simple care. Dust the piece regularly and treat the wood once or twice a year with natural furniture oil. Rub stains dry immediately and do not use aggressive cleaning products. Give the hinges a light lubrication once a year and use coasters under warm objects on the top. That way your sideboard stays a well kept piece for years.

What else goes with a sideboard

A sideboard is a statement piece, not a bare cabinet. Hang a large mirror or an artwork above it, with a width of around two thirds of the piece for a pleasing proportion. Style the top in three zones: a tall item on one side, something horizontal such as stacked books in the middle and a lamp or small bowl on the other side. Combine further with a matching dining table or sofa in the same tone and with atmospheric table lamps. For customers from Twente and the German border region the showroom is centrally located, with free parking right outside.
