What is a TV unit and which material suits you

A TV unit does not just carry your screen, it also offers storage for a media player, soundbar, games console and cables. The timber sets the look. Mango wood is warm brown with a live edge, affordable and durable, and one of our best sellers. Teak is rich in oils, moisture resistant and timeless. Suar wood has a dramatic, marble-like figure as a tropical hardwood. For a rugged look there are industrial models with metal accents in black, bronze or gold, and for light interiors there are sleek white high-gloss units.

Sizing advice: which width and height for your television

Choose the width to suit your screen. A good rule of thumb is: unit width is the TV diagonal plus around 30 cm, with roughly 30 to 40 cm of space either side of the TV for visual balance. For a 55 inch TV, around 124 cm wide, a unit of 160 to 200 cm is ideal; for 65 inch, around 145 cm, choose 200 to 220 cm. The height determines your viewing comfort: the centre of the screen should sit at seated eye level, around 105 to 115 cm from the floor. For a 65 inch TV a unit 50 to 55 cm high works well, for a larger 75 inch screen slightly lower, around 45 to 50 cm.

Type and layout: freestanding or wall-hung

A freestanding TV unit sits classically on the floor, is sturdy and offers plenty of storage: it works on any floor and any wall, so when in doubt this is the safe choice. A wall-hung TV unit is fixed to the wall, gives your living room an airy look and keeps the floor beneath it easy to clean; it does need a wall that can carry the weight. Many wall-hung models have LED mood lighting underneath for extra ambience. Also look at the layout: closed doors hide the receiver or the toys, while open compartments are handy for a soundbar or set-top box. Push-to-open drawers give a sleek, handle-free look.

Functions: storage and cable management

A TV unit is more than decoration. Useful features are compartments for a media player, soundbar and games console, drawers for remote controls and small accessories, and cable management with feed-through openings at the back and channels inside to route cables neatly. If you need to house a soundbar of 100 to 120 cm, allow an open compartment at least 110 cm wide and 12 to 15 cm high. Some models also have integrated LED strips underneath for evening atmosphere, sometimes with a remote control for colour and brightness.
