Counter Height Bar Stools

A counter stool is the logical choice if you have a kitchen island or worktop at standard height. With a seat height of around 65 cm you sit at exactly the right distance from the surface: high enough to join the conversation while someone is cooking, low enough to stay comfortable. At Mokana Meubelen in Enschede you will find a broad selection of counter stools in leather, fabric, wood and metal, for kitchens and slightly taller dining tables.

What is a counter stool?

A counter stool has a seat height of 65 cm and sits between an ordinary dining chair (around 45 cm) and a tall bar stool (around 75 cm). This size is made for worktops and kitchen islands of roughly 90 cm high. That gives you comfortable leg and knee room under the surface, without sitting high up and far away from everyone else.

Sizing advice: choose on worktop height

Always measure your surface first. For worktops of 88 to 92 cm a counter stool (65 cm seat height) is the right choice; allow 25 to 30 cm of space between the seat and the underside of the worktop, so your legs fit comfortably underneath. If you have a genuine bar top of 105 to 110 cm high, a tall bar stool with a 75 cm seat height is the one you want. The relationship between seat and surface determines seating comfort more than the style of the stool does.

Options: with or without a back, swivel or fixed

Counter stools come in many versions. Choose leather, fabric, wood or metal, with or without armrests and with or without a backrest. A model with a backrest stays comfortable for longer, while a sleek stool without a back tucks neatly under the worktop and keeps the look calm. Swivel versions are handy at an island where people join from several directions. Fabric and swivel versions are also available.

Comfortable spacing at a worktop or island

If you want to place several stools side by side, allow at least 60 cm between stools, measured centre to centre. That gives everyone elbow room and makes it easy to sit down and get up. Around the corner of an island you can space stools slightly more generously, so knees do not meet.

Care by material

Care follows the material. Keep leather supple and looking good with a suitable care product and wipe it regularly. Vacuum fabric with a soft brush and treat stains quickly. Wipe wooden legs and seats with a slightly damp cloth, and keep metal bases dry and clean. That way your stools stay sharp for years, precisely in a spot that gets a lot of use.
