Round coffee table: shape and material

The round shape feels soft and inviting and works well in families with children, because there are no sharp corners. In terms of material you have plenty of choice with us. Solid mango wood is light and sleek and suits almost any interior. Suar wood, also known as raintree, has dramatic marbling and a character all of its own. Teak gives warm honey to dark brown tones. For a luxurious look there are marble tops on a steel base, and for an industrial feel, models with a rough wooden top and a black steel frame.

Which diameter suits my sofa

Choose the size based on your seating area and the room. 60 to 80 cm suits small living rooms and a 2-seater sofa. 90 to 100 cm is usual for a 3-seater sofa or a compact L-shaped seating area. 110 to 120 cm works well with large corner sofas and in open-plan living rooms. A handy rule of thumb is to allow roughly 60 per cent of the width of your sofa. For a 2-seater sofa of around 180 cm that means 90 to 100 cm in diameter, for a 3-seater sofa of 210 cm more like 100 to 120 cm.

Single table, set or nesting tables

Many models are available as a set of two round tables at different heights, or as nesting tables that slide under one another. That is ideal for smaller living rooms where you want flexible surface area: you pull a table out when you need it and slide it back when you want the space. A single round coffee table always stays in place and forms a calm centrepiece. You can also combine your coffee table with a side table or console table for extra room for a lamp or books.

Matching the height to the seat

The standard height lies between 35 and 45 cm. Keep the table slightly lower than the seat of your sofa and everything sits comfortably. For a lounge sofa with a low seat height choose around 35 cm, for a normal seat height 40 to 45 cm. A set with two heights gives you flexibility: you always have a surface at the right height to hand.

Caring for wood and marble

Keep wooden tops beautiful by wiping up spills quickly and not placing the table in prolonged, direct sunlight. Marble is attractive but porous: mop up stains quickly and use coasters under glasses and hot mugs. Metal bases can simply be wiped with a damp cloth.
