There are pieces of furniture that decorate a room. And there are pieces that
define a room. This side table in solid Borneo ironwood
belongs, without doubt, to the second category. With a tabletop of 8
centimetres of solid wood, a total weight of approximately 200
kilograms and a width of 220 centimetres, this side table
radiates a strength you will rarely encounter elsewhere. No glued planks, no veneer,
no filler material: only solid Borneo ironwood, from front to back, from top to
bottom.
Borneo ironwood: the heaviest furniture wood in the world
Borneo ironwood: also known as Ulin or Belian,
comes from the rainforests of Borneo and is regarded as one of the heaviest, hardest
and most durable timbers available for furniture production. The wood density of Ulin
lies between 800 and 1,100 kg/m³: for comparison, teak sits around
650 kg/m³ and oak around 700 kg/m³. Borneo ironwood literally sinks in water. The
wood is by nature extremely resistant to moisture, fungi and insects,
without any treatment being required. Traditionally, Ulin is used for constructions
intended to last for centuries: bridges, foundation piles, dyke revetments. As a
furniture material it is therefore exceptionally rare, and all the more valuable.
The dark brown colour, the coarse wood structure, the visible grain patterns,
irregular cracks and natural discolourations are not flaws: they are the signature of
a timber that has grown over decades under extreme conditions. Each piece of Borneo
ironwood tells its own story. And with that, every side table made from it is
completely unique.
Design: raw and pure, yet considered
The design of this side table has deliberately been kept restrained, because the
wood itself already says everything. The solid top of 8 cm thick rests
on robust, rectangular legs that form one whole with the construction. Beneath it sits
an open lower shelf in the same solid ironwood: practical as extra
storage space for decorative objects, baskets or books, and visually a perfect
counterpart to the heavy top surface.
The finish is raw and natural: the wood is lightly treated to preserve the surface
