Straight, round, oval or corner seating

Start with your table shape and the space around it. A straight bench suits a long table edge. A curved bench must match the table's curve and leave enough room to sit down. For a corner arrangement, measure both sides and the access space.

Measure the space between the table legs

Check the clear distance between the legs and the height beneath the top and any apron. Compare these with the bench's overall width and arm height. Being shorter than the table top does not guarantee that a bench slides underneath.

Allow roughly 60 cm of usable seat width per adult as a starting point. Arms and curves may reduce the usable width. Compare seat height and depth with your dining chairs and leave a clear route around your dining table.

Fabric, leather, wood and backrests

Fabric offers a choice of weaves, textures and colours; leather has a different feel and varies by type. Check whether a wood specification refers to the seat or just the frame. An upholstered bench with a wooden frame is not a wooden seat. A backrest provides support for longer meals, while a backless bench keeps the view through the room open.
