Materials that cope with the Dutch climate
The choice of material determines the upkeep and the look. Teak is naturally weather resistant and frost proof; it turns silver grey by itself under UV and rain, but keeps its strength. If you want to keep the warm honey colour, treat it annually with teak oil. Powder-coated aluminium does not rust and is light in weight, handy if you move the table around now and then. HPL composite (High Pressure Laminate) is a layered material that is completely waterproof and colourfast, virtually maintenance free and available in looks reminiscent of wood or concrete. All three are frost proof.
Sizing advice: how many people at the table
For comfortable seating, allow at least 60 cm of seating space per person. For four people choose roughly 120 to 160 cm, for six people around 180 cm and for eight people 220 to 240 cm. If you often have varying numbers of guests, an extending table is practical: it grows when more people join and stays compact when there are just two of you.
Care by material
Every material asks for something slightly different. Teak needs very little: rinsing and a light scrub keeps the top clean, and annual teak oil is only needed if you want to keep the honey colour. Wipe aluminium with a damp cloth and keep it free of stubborn dirt. HPL is the easiest: a cloth and some water are enough, and the top stays colourfast. Do not leave leaves or moisture on the surface for long periods and every table will stay beautiful for years.
