What is a wing chair

A wing chair owes its name to the high side panels on the backrest. Originally those wings were added to protect the head from the draughts of open fireplaces, so you could sit warm and out of the wind. That shape has stayed, even though the open fire is now more often about atmosphere than necessity. Its hallmark is the imposing, enveloping seat, often with classic buttoning: a stitched pattern with buttons worked into it.
