What is a black dining table and what is it made from?

Our black dining tables are made from solid mango stained and lacquered black, or from deeply patinated reclaimed teak that is naturally dark in tone. We combine both versions with a black or anthracite steel base, which gives a sturdy, industrial look. Because it is genuinely solid wood, the grain stays visible and the table feels warm, even in a dark finish. Models range from round mango wood to oval tops with a bevelled edge.

Which size and shape suit your dining room?

The right size depends on how many people you want to seat and how much circulation space there is around the table. Keep enough space clear all around so people can sit down comfortably and walk past the chairs. A round or oval black table looks softer and is pleasant for conversation, while a rectangular top offers more room and lines up neatly in a long space. If you are unsure about the dimensions, do experience the tables in our showroom before you choose.

How do you combine a black table with chairs?

With a black dining table you choose between contrast and uniformity. For contrast, combine it with white or beige fabric dining chairs, which gives a contemporary, graphic look. For a single-minded, tough look, choose black leather dining chairs. If you want a truly dramatic effect, a black table works beautifully with cognac leather chairs: the warm leather colour leaps out against the dark top.

Which interior style does black suit?

Black works excellently with modern, industrial and hotel chic styles. Combine it with white walls and a light floor to let the table breathe. For country interiors an all-black table is usually too dark: natural mango or oak comes into its own better there. A black table works at its best when you deliberately use it as a focal point, not when it disappears among other dark elements.

How do you care for a black dining table?

Wipe the top regularly with a damp cloth and mild soapy water, then dry it immediately. Avoid abrasive products that can damage the lacquer. On a dark finish, small scratches show up sooner, because the lighter underlying colour of the wood accentuates them: so use coasters and placemats. For small damage you can use a black touch-up pen. Our tables have a matt lacquer that protects against discolouration, but do keep the table out of prolonged direct sunlight.
