What is a sofa and which size suits you

A standalone sofa gives you flexibility that a fixed corner sofa cannot: you can place it on its own, in parallel or in an L-shaped layout, and simply move it around later when you move house or rearrange. Choose the size based on the number of people and your space. A 2-seater sofa (160 to 200 cm) seats two adults comfortably and works well in a compact room or as an addition to a larger sofa. A 3-seater sofa (220 to 240 cm) is the standard choice for the living room: room for three people, or for two with space to stretch out. The 2.5-seater (200 to 220 cm) is the compromise for a medium-sized room. Keep roughly 60 cm of clear circulation space all around.

Combining and arranging: a corner layout with separate sofas

An L-shaped layout with a 2-seater and a 3-seater often works better in medium-sized rooms than a fixed corner sofa, which quickly becomes too dominant or too static there. The big advantage: the sofas stay separate, so you can rearrange them later when you move or change your interior. A parallel layout, two sofas facing each other with a coffee table in between, creates a more formal, sociable conversation area and looks great in rooms with high ceilings. Upholstery and filling: leather, fabric or bouclé

The upholstery determines the look, the upkeep and the lifespan. Real leather is robust, gains character over the years and lasts a long time; cognac looks the warmest, black the most industrial and taupe the most modern. Faux leather is an affordable alternative with a leather look. Fabric such as linen, cotton blends and woven fabrics feels warm and soft; a stain-repellent treatment is advisable. Bouclé is soft and makes an atmospheric statement. Under the upholstery sits the filling: cold foam is the comfortable standard, pocket springs with foam is the premium choice with a longer lifespan, and memory foam distributes pressure and is welcome if you have back complaints. Choose strong, tightly woven fabrics or quality leather if the sofa is used intensively every day.

Ergonomics: seat depth, seat height and back support

Seating comfort is personal, and the dimensions determine how a sofa feels. The seat depth (40 to 55 cm) determines whether you sit upright or sink back and lounge. The seat height (40 to 45 cm) determines how easily you get up. The backrest height influences the support for your shoulders and neck.
