What makes a corner sofa small?

Compact corner sofas are usually 220 to 260 cm long, with a chaise or corner section of 140 to 160 cm deep. At that size two people sit generously and three a little more snugly. Go under 220 cm and three really does become a squeeze. For even smaller rooms a two-seater with chaise or a loveseat is often the better choice. So measure your living room carefully in advance and think in terms of the final layout you want.

Materials and colours for small rooms

Colour determines how large your room looks. Pale tones such as cream white, beige, light grey and soft pastels make a small room feel visually more spacious and airy. If you would rather have a snug, enveloping feeling, dark colours work well, although they do fill the room visually a little more. For character, choose a striking fabric or leather colour such as cognac leather or a deep velvet. Leather is hard-wearing and ages beautifully, fabric and velvet feel soft and warm.

Clever placement in a compact living room

Place a small corner sofa against two walls or in a corner, so you use the space to the full and keep the middle of the room open. Allow at least 60 cm of walkway between the sofa and other furniture, so you can pass comfortably. A round coffee table softens the whole and avoids sharp corners in a tight layout. A mirror on the wall reinforces the sense of space further still.

Care that suits the fabric

How you care for a small corner sofa depends on the upholstery. Keep fabric and velvet fresh by vacuuming regularly with a soft brush and treating stains quickly. Leather stays supple with a suitable care product and is best kept out of strong direct sunlight. Plumping and turning the loose cushions regularly keeps the seat firmer and more even for longer.
