Wall Lights

A wall light does something a ceiling light cannot: it gives indirect light and works as an accent on the wall at the same time. In a hallway, above the bed or as an atmospheric element in the living room, a wall light makes a room warmer and more layered. At Mokana Meubelen in Enschede you will find wall lights in brass, black steel and glass, in styles that run from classic to sleek.

What is a wall light and which materials are there

A wall light is mounted directly on the wall and generally lights indirectly or semi-directionally. That means it mainly provides atmosphere and is not intended as reading light. The look depends strongly on the material. Brass gives a warm, classic glow, black steel suits a sleeker or industrial interior, and models with glass soften the light and spread it nicely across the wall.

At what height should you hang a wall light

As a rule of thumb, hang a wall light 150 to 170 cm above the floor. In hallways it can go a little higher, towards 180 cm, so you do not brush past it with your head. Around a mirror or wall decoration, two wall lights as a pair often look best. For a complete wall look, combine several fittings at different heights.

Wiring and placement

The tidiest result comes from running the wiring inside the wall. If that is not possible, choose a surface trunking in a colour that matches the fitting, so the whole stays calm. In long hallways or by the front door, place wall lights every 2 to 3 metres, which gives continuous lighting without dark spots.

Dimming and light

If you want to be able to control the mood, check the wiring. With the right LED and a dimming system a wall light dims well, but not every model has a dimmable connection as standard. So do ask if dimming matters to you. For reading or tasks you will still need a directional light; the wall light mainly does the atmospheric work.

If you are unsure about the height or the number, our advisers are happy to think along.

What else goes with wall lighting

A wall light comes into its own in combination with other light sources. Think of a floor or table lamp for reading light and of wall decoration or a mirror to dress the same wall. That way you build a warm, layered mood with several points of light rather than one bright ceiling fitting.

Frequently asked questions

At what height should I hang a wall light?

Usually 150 to 170 cm above the floor. In hallways you can go higher, towards 180 cm, so you do not brush past it with your head.

Can I conceal the wiring?

The neatest result is wiring run inside the wall. If that is not possible, use surface trunking in a colour that matches the fitting.

Does a wall light give enough light to read by?

A wall light generally gives indirect or semi-directional light and is mainly intended for atmosphere. For reading light, combine it with a directional lamp.

Can I fit several wall lights in a hallway?

Yes, that works well in long hallways or by the front door. Place them every 2 to 3 metres for continuous lighting.

Are wall lights dimmable?

With the right LED and a dimming system they are. Not every model has a dimmable connection as standard, so do ask if dimming matters to you.
