What is a console table and where do you put it

A console table makes use of space that often stays empty. Put it in the hallway as a landing spot for keys and post, behind the sofa for lamps and plants, or along a wall for decoration with a large mirror above it. Because the table is narrow and tall, it adds function and atmosphere without taking up much circulation space. Combine it with wall decor for a considered, polished look.

Sizing advice: height, depth and width

Standard console tables are 75 to 90 cm high, 30 to 45 cm deep and 100 to 200 cm wide. The shallow depth means you lose very little space in a hallway or behind a sofa. In a hallway you would often go for a depth of 25 to 35 cm: enough for keys, post and a small dish without blocking the passage; in a more spacious hallway up to 45 cm works. If you are placing the table behind a sofa with a backrest of around 90 cm, choose a height of 85 to 95 cm for a pleasing visual balance. For larger spots there are made-to-measure models up to 240 cm wide.

Material and style

The finish determines the character. Solid mango looks sleek, suar wood has a dramatic grain, and reclaimed teak has a lived-in, warm look. For an industrial look, choose steel combined with rough wood. If you would rather have a smart, hotel-worthy feel, wood combined with brass or marble works beautifully. So there is a fitting console table for every interior, from understated to statement.

Console table or side table

The difference lies in shape and function. A console table is narrow (30 to 45 cm) and tall (75 to 90 cm) and stands against a wall as a fixed focal point. A side table is small and compact (40 to 55 cm high) and stands freely beside a chair or sofa, handy for putting down a cup or a book. They complement each other well: the console table structures the room, the side table is the flexible extra.
