What is a pendant light and which materials are there

A pendant light hangs from the ceiling and lights the spot beneath it directly, usually the dining table or a seating area. The material sets the look. Black steel gives an industrial, robust feel, brass radiates a warm, hotel chic elegance, rattan brings a country, natural atmosphere and glass adds a light, refined touch. Hanging height: the right sizing advice

The height at which you hang a pendant light is the difference between good lighting and a nuisance. Above a dining table, hang the light 60 to 75 cm above the table top. Hang it too high and the table is poorly lit. Hang it too low and you get glare or it gets in the way. This distance ensures the light falls nicely across the top without disturbing the conversation at the table.

The right diameter and number of lights

For a balanced look, choose a light diameter of around 50 per cent of the table width. With a table of 200 cm that gives you a diameter of around 80 to 100 cm. For shorter tables one large light is enough. With long tables of 240 cm and more it looks better to hang several smaller pendants in a row or to choose a track fitting with several lamps, so the whole length is lit evenly.

Light colour and dimming

The light colour sets the mood at the table. For the dining room choose a warm colour temperature of 2400K to 2700K, extra warm white, which creates a cosy, welcoming feel. If you want to adapt the light to the moment, dimming is ideal: with the right LED and a dimmer switch you can take the light from bright for dinner to subdued for drinks afterwards.
