What makes a dining table robust?

Robustness comes from the combination of a thick top of 5 to 10 cm instead of the usual 3 to 4 cm, heavy bases in solid wood or sturdy steel, and wide tops from around 100 cm. The result is a piece that lasts a lifetime and has the presence of a loft restaurant or a luxury farmhouse. The thicker the top, the more robust the whole looks, and the heavier the table becomes.

Woods with a character of their own

Every wood has its own mood. Solid mango is light and full of character, reclaimed teak is darker and lived-in, suar wood stands out for its dramatic marbling and wide tree trunk surfaces, and oak is classic and timeless. If you want the most characterful and robust wood, suar wood and reclaimed teak are the strongest choice thanks to their density. For extremely robust versions, take a look at our tree trunk tables.

Bases: wood or steel

Robust dining tables stand on solid wooden legs in the same wood as the top, or on heavy steel bases such as a U-shaped leg, a cross beam or an X-frame. Wooden legs give a rustic, warm look that lets the top speak. A steel base pulls the table towards industrial and sets a crisp contrast against the warm wood. Both carry the weight of a thick top without any trouble.

Caring for solid wood

Solid wood lives, which is its charm and asks for a little attention. Wipe the top with a slightly damp cloth and dry it afterwards, never leave moisture standing on the wood and use coasters under hot pans and wet glasses. Depending on the finish, keep the wood beautiful with a suitable care product or oil. Small scratches and colour nuances are part of a lived-in, robust table and actually add character.

Space, placement and delivery

A robust table asks for space. Allow at least 80 cm of clear space all round for chairs and circulation, so everyone can sit down comfortably and walk past the table. Along the wall a dining bench works beautifully and saves walking space. These tables are heavy, usually 100 to 250 kg depending on size and wood, so choose a permanent spot in advance. Combine a robust dining table with sturdy dining chairs or a dining bench along the wall, and keep the rest of the dining area calm so the table stays the centrepiece. A well chosen pendant light at the right height and a country, industrial or hotel chic styling complete the picture.
