What makes a good lampshade

The shade determines both the quality of the light and the appearance of your lamp. A dense, substantial shade gives warm, filtered light and creates a cosy mood, while a more open or lighter model lets more light through. So think in advance about the function of the lamp: do you want it purely as an atmospheric light, or should it give enough light to read by comfortably? Material and colour play a big part in that, so choose deliberately between a calm, neutral shade or an outspoken print as a focal point.

Choosing the right size

Online it is hard to work out which size lampshade you need, but a few rules of thumb will get you a long way. First look at the length of the lamp base. A general rule is that the total height of the lamp consists of roughly 60% base and 40% shade. You determine the width by taking the width of the lamp base times two: the wider the base, the wider the shade can be. These proportions make for a lamp that is in balance. The most important thing, of course, remains that you choose what you find beautiful.

Shape, colour and material

Thinking of replacing your old lampshade? Try something completely different from what you have now. Because you are used to a particular shade, you are quickly inclined to buy the same again, whereas a different design or shape can be genuinely refreshing. A shade with a geometric or graphic print, for example, can look surprisingly good in all sorts of interiors.
