What makes a good desk and which wood should you choose

A desk is your permanent workspace, so the top has to be sturdy and the look has to suit your room. Solid mango is sleek and even and lasts a long time. Suar wood has more character thanks to its marbling and turns the desk into an instant focal point. Reclaimed teak gives a warm, robust look. A wooden top on a steel base feels at home in an industrial interior, while a sleek top on a U-shaped leg suits a modern style better.

Sizing advice: width, depth and screens

Our desks are generally 120 to 180 cm wide and 60 to 80 cm deep. For a compact workspace with a single 24 to 27 inch monitor, a desk of around 120 cm wide and 60 cm deep is enough. If you work with two monitors or an ultrawide screen, choose at least 160 cm wide so you keep enough room for keyboard and notes. The standard height is 75 cm; some models are height adjustable.

Options: with or without drawers

If you want functional storage, choose a desk with drawers, handy for cables, papers and small desk items you would rather keep out of sight. If you prefer a sleek, open look, a desk without drawers and with an attractive base is a fine choice. All desks can also be ordered made to measure: a different width, height, top shape or wood type. The delivery time for made-to-measure work is generally 8 to 12 weeks.

Caring for a wooden desk

A wooden desk stays beautiful with simple care. Dust regularly and wipe up spills immediately so no rings form. Because a desktop gets intensive use, we recommend a lacquer layer or oil treatment as a protective coat; it makes the surface more resistant to daily use and easier to keep clean. Top up an oiled top periodically to keep the colour deep and warm.
