Why the bulb makes such a difference

The bulb determines not only how much light a lamp gives, but also the atmosphere in the room. The filament is also often visible, certainly on the larger models, and comes in a bar or spiral shape. Choose a filament you like the look of and that suits the lamp; even within the bar and spiral shapes there are further differences in shape and size. That way the bulb itself becomes a decorative part of your lamp.

LED and dimmable light

Many of our light bulbs are LED bulbs, a trend that has been continuing for years. LED is energy saving, good for the environment, maintenance free and long lasting, so it is a sensible choice. If you want to decide how bright the lamp burns, go for dimmable bulbs. That way the mood is in your hands: bright light when you want to read a book, or dimmed during a film evening. Check the specifications for the available dimmer settings.

Fitting, brightness and colour temperature

Not every bulb fits every fitting, and colour and brightness differ too. With fittings it is usually an E14 or an E27, and they do not fit the wrong holder, so check this in advance. Brightness is expressed in lumens: the more lumens, the more powerful the light. Colour temperature is expressed in Kelvin, which lets you choose between warmer and whiter light. With these three values you determine exactly the light that suits your lamp and space.

Care and service life

LED bulbs are maintenance free and have a long service life, which means you have to replace them far less often than traditional bulbs. Dust the bulb carefully now and then so the light stays clear, and when replacing, make sure you choose the same fitting and a matching colour temperature. That way the mood in your room stays consistent.

Combine the lighting mood with your pendant lights, floor lamps, table lamps or wall lights and match the light colour and dimmability to the room. That way you build a coherent lighting plan at home in which every lamp gives exactly the effect you want.
