The right size for your wall

The ideal size depends on the room. For a living room a diameter of around 50 to 80 cm works well, large enough to stand out without dominating the wall. In the kitchen 30 to 50 cm is usually plenty. If you want to create a real statement wall, choose a clock of 80 to 100 cm that draws the eye immediately. When choosing, bear in mind the size of the wall and the furniture beneath it, so the proportions are right.

Hanging at the right height

For the best look, hang the centre of the clock at eye level, around 150 to 160 cm above the floor. For a statement effect a large clock can go a little higher, so it fills the space above a sideboard or sofa. Think about the position in advance: a clock comes into its own on a wall with some calm around it, where it gets the attention it deserves.

Movement and sound

Most clocks run on an AA battery, so you can hang them without any fuss. When choosing, look at the type of movement: many models have what is called a silent sweep movement, where the hand runs smoothly without an audible tick. That is welcome in a bedroom or a quiet living space. Whether a model has this silent movement is stated in the product specifications.
