Good lighting is the difference between a room that is merely functional and a room where you feel at home. At Mokana Meubelen in Enschede we treat lighting as part of your interior: pendant lights above the dining table, floor lamps for atmosphere, reading lights by your armchair and wall lights for accents. Types of lighting and where to use them

Every fitting has its own role. A pendant light marks a spot, such as the dining table or the kitchen island. A floor lamp creates an island of light in the living room and provides soft general lighting. A table lamp gives a warm accent on a sideboard or side table, and a wall light works indirectly and is ideal for hallways, bedrooms and atmospheric accents. Our models range from industrial black steel fittings to sleek modern and warm, hotel chic versions in brass, rattan and glass.

Pendant lights at the right height above the dining table

The pendant light above your dining table sets the mood of the whole dining room. Hang it some sixty to seventy-five centimetres above the table top: too high and the table is poorly lit, too low and you get glare. For a long table choose two or three smaller lights at equal spacing, or one long track fitting. That spreads the light nicely across the whole top.

Placing floor lamps, reading lights and wall lights

Put a floor lamp beside an armchair or sofa for directed, atmospheric lighting. A reading light with a flexible arm is perfect for anyone who likes to read or do handwork, because it gives light without casting a shadow on your work. Place wall lights at some one hundred and fifty to one hundred and seventy centimetres high, or in pairs around a mirror or painting, for a calm and symmetrical look. That way you build a warm room layer by layer with different points of light.

Light colour, dimming and LED

For living and sleeping spaces we advise a warm colour temperature between 2400K and 2700K, that extra warm white light you want at home. For kitchens and studies 3000K works well; higher temperatures quickly look clinical and are less suited to living in. Most of our lights are dimmable with the right LED light source and a suitable dimmer switch. LED also uses far less energy than halogen and lasts much longer, without giving up that warm colour.
