What makes a dining table industrial

The industrial character lies in the combination of raw wood and black steel. Typical features are a top with visible grain and knots, a base in black, anthracite or brushed steel, and legs in the shape of a U, an X or a classic four-leg frame. Sometimes you see exposed bolt heads or rivets that reinforce the factory look. The look is inspired by old workshop furniture, where honesty of material comes first: you see exactly how the table is made.

Mango wood or reclaimed teak

For the top you can broadly go two ways. Mango wood is sleeker and more even in tone, ideal if you want an industrial but tidy look. Reclaimed teak has more character and a lived-in feel, with natural colour variation and traces of an earlier life. Both timbers combine beautifully with a black steel base. Choosing the right size

Industrial dining tables come as standard in lengths of around 160 to 240 cm, with a width of around 90 to 100 cm and a height of 75 cm. For a genuine loft table we carry models up to around 320 cm, ideal above a large group or in a room with plenty of height. Always check whether there is enough walking space around the table: allow around 70 to 80 cm of clearance so people can pull up comfortably. If no standard size fits, we make the table to measure in the dimensions you want, with a different timber, base or top thickness.

Care and finish

The wood on an industrial dining table is roughly finished, but protected with a matt lacquer or oil. Small scratches come with the genre and give the table more character. If you want maximum protection against stains and moisture, choose a lacquered finish rather than oil. The steel base is powder coated with a matt black or anthracite layer that prevents rust: an occasional wipe with a damp cloth is enough, and a light scratch can be touched up with a touch-up pen.
