Advantages of a dining bench

A bench seats more people than separate chairs, because no space is lost in between. You get an atmospheric, cosy look that suits a restaurant-style feel as well as family dining rooms. And children often love sitting next to each other on a bench rather than on separate chairs. That way you combine comfort, atmosphere and practical seating in one piece.

Sizing advice and seats

As a guideline, allow at least 60 cm of seating space per person. A bench of 140 cm comfortably seats 2 adults, 180 cm seats 3 people and 200 to 240 cm seats 3 to 4 people. For children, or if people sit a little closer together, a few more will fit. Options: leather, fabric and base

Leather dining benches in cognac, brown or black look great in an industrial or hotel chic scheme. Fabric models in velvet, bouclé or microfibre give a soft, contemporary feel. The bases come in solid wood or steel, so you can tie the bench in with the rest of your interior. For long, sociable dinners, choose a bench with good filling, a backrest at the right height and a comfortable fabric or leather. A bench without a backrest is less suitable for sitting for long periods.

Combining with chairs

The usual layout is the bench along the wall side, so it is not in the walkway, with separate dining chairs on the other side and at the ends. Make sure the heights and styles work together. A popular trend is a leather bench along the wall side with fabric chairs opposite. Either keep the same colour tone or go for deliberate contrast, and keep the look uniform. Care

Care depends on the upholstery. Dust leather regularly and top it up now and then so it stays supple. Keep fabric upholstery fresh with regular vacuuming and by treating small stains immediately. Wipe a wooden base with a slightly damp cloth. That way your dining bench keeps looking well cared for over the years, even with intensive daily use.
