Bar stools are the high seats for a bar, bar table or kitchen island. At Mokana Meubelen in Enschede you will find a wide collection of bar stools in leather, fabric, wood and metal: fixed and height-adjustable models, with or without a backrest, swivel or fixed. In the showroom they are set out at a test bar, so you can try them before you choose.

What is a bar stool and which seat height suits you

A bar stool is designed for a higher worktop than an ordinary dining chair. The right seat height depends on your worktop. For a standard kitchen island or worktop of 90 cm, choose a bar stool with a seat height of 65 cm, also known as kitchen height. For a bar or raised island of 105 to 110 cm, choose 75 cm, or bar height. An extra-high bar of 115 to 120 cm calls for a seat height of around 80 cm, which is fairly rare. The rule of thumb: keep 25 to 35 cm between the top and the seat, so you have room for your legs and sit comfortably.

Version: adjustable, swivel and with a footrest

Alongside seat height, the features determine your comfort. A height-adjustable bar stool has a gas lift that lets you adjust the seat, roughly between 60 and 80 cm: handy if you want one stool for several heights, for example kitchen and bar. Many models are swivel, either freely through 360 degrees or with a return spring that turns the stool back: pleasant if you switch between eating, watching TV and conversation. A fixed stool is sturdier and suits a more compact kitchen island. A built-in footrest is essential for long sessions at a bar. Whether a model swivels is stated in the product specifications on the product page.

Material and style: leather, fabric, bouclé or wood

The upholstery determines both mood and maintenance, and that counts double in a kitchen zone. Leather is easy to care for and stain-resistant, with a professional look; cognac feels warmest, black more industrial. Fabric is warm and comfortable with a broad colour choice, and a stain-repellent treatment is worth having close to the hob. Bouclé makes an atmospheric statement in taupe or cream, but is less ideal in spots with a lot of grease spatter. A wooden seat in solid mango, oak or teak is robust and easy to clean. For the base, choose between wooden legs or a clean metal frame, suiting anything from hotel chic to industrial.

Ordering singly or in sets

Order bar stools singly for one spot, or in sets of two, three or four for a uniform look at a bar or kitchen island. A set gives a calm overall picture and makes sure the seat height and base are the same everywhere. Combine the stools with one of our bar tables, or place them straight at your kitchen island. If you are looking for individual seats elsewhere, also take a look at our dining chairs and dining benches.

Why buy your bar stools at Mokana

In our furniture store at Hogelandsingel 49 in Enschede the bar stools are set out at a test bar at both standard heights, so you can feel exactly whether 65 cm or 75 cm suits your worktop. You can compare swivel against fixed and leather against fabric or bouclé in a couple of minutes. Our consultants measure up with you and help you choose the right height and upholstery. We deliver with our own service throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, with assembly in the spot you want.

What else goes with bar stools

For a successful bar area, the combination counts. Choose stools in a wood or colour that ties in with your kitchen or bar table, and allow enough width per stool so people sit comfortably side by side. For anyone who sits at the island for a long time, a model with a backrest, armrests and a footrest is the most pleasant. For customers from Twente and the German border region the showroom is centrally located, with free parking right outside.

Frequently asked questions

Which bar stool height suits my kitchen island?

For a standard kitchen island or worktop of 90 cm, choose a seat height of 65 cm. For a raised island or bar of 105 to 110 cm, choose 75 cm. Allow 25 to 35 cm between the seat and the top for comfortable seating.

What is an adjustable bar stool?

An adjustable bar stool has a gas lift that lets you adjust the seat height, roughly between 60 and 80 cm. That is handy if you want one stool for several heights, for example for kitchen and bar.

Are the bar stools swivel stools?

Many models are, either freely through 360 degrees or with a return spring that turns the stool back to its starting position. Whether a specific model swivels is stated in the product specifications on the product page.

Can I order bar stools singly or in sets?

Both are possible. Individual stools for a single spot, or sets of two, three or four for a uniform look at a bar or kitchen island. A set keeps the seat height and base the same everywhere.

Which bar stool is most comfortable for long sitting?

For long sitting, choose a model with a backrest, armrests, a footrest and an upholstered seat. Leather or fabric with good padding gives the most comfort. In the showroom you can test various models.

Which upholstery is practical in a kitchen zone?

Leather is easy to care for and stain-resistant, and a wooden seat is robust and easy to clean. Fabric and bouclé bring plenty of character, but close to the hob they are more vulnerable to grease spatter, so a stain-repellent treatment helps there.
