What counts as decoration and what do you use it for

Decoration covers several kinds of accessory, each with its own role. Vases in stoneware, ceramic, glass or bronze can be styled with dry branches, slender stems or left to stand alone. Sculptures in ceramic, concrete, marble or polished metal work as a statement piece on a sideboard or shelving unit. Candle holders in bronze, matt black steel, brass or ceramic bring atmosphere in the evening. Bowls are practical and decorative at once, for keys or small objects on a console table for instance. Trays in teak, suar wood or cane form a fine base for a styled grouping on the coffee table.

How much decoration fits in a room

With decoration, less is usually more. Choose a limited number of statement pieces per room rather than lots of loose items. For a wabi-sabi feel three to five pieces work well, for hotel chic slightly more, and for a country style you can group a little more generously. Work in odd groups of three or five, vary the height and size, and keep around sixty per cent of the surface clear so every piece can be seen properly.

Styling tips for your decoration

A few simple rules lift your styling. The rule of three groups three pieces of different heights and works on a sideboard, coffee table or windowsill. Work with height variation in low, medium and tall for balance, certainly if a wall piece hangs above. Mix a maximum of three materials per group, for example ceramic, wood and textile, and stay within one colour family of earthy, cool or warm tones with at most one accent colour. On a coffee table, stick to a tray with two or three pieces, keeping most of the top clear for coffee and books.

Care and seasonal changes

Decoration lends itself well to small, regular refreshes. Change light accents such as dried flowers with the season, and once or twice a year give a room a bigger refresh. Invest in timeless basics such as beautiful vases and sculptures, and swap the less expensive accents along with the season. That keeps your interior fresh without having to replace everything each time.

Decoration looks best in combination with the rest of your interior. Match the material or colour to your furniture for calm and uniformity, or deliberately set a contrast as an accent. Neutral tones such as black, white, beige, clay brown and brushed metal fit almost anywhere; a single brightly coloured piece adds just the right accent.
