What makes a sofa a lounge sofa?

The difference is mainly in the seat depth. A standard sofa has a seat depth of around 90 to 105 cm, while a lounge sofa is often 110 to 130 cm deep. That lets you sit with your legs up on the seat or stretch right out. Other typical features are the soft foam filling you sink into, wide armrests and often a slightly lower back that reinforces the lounge feeling. Loose back cushions give you the freedom to sit upright whenever you want to.

Which fabric or upholstery should you choose?

The look and the upkeep of your lounge sofa depend heavily on the upholstery. Leather in cognac, brown or black gives a timeless, warm look and lasts for years. Bouclé suits a modern interior, velvet adds a luxurious, soft sheen, and microfibre is the practical choice for families with children or pets. Choose the upholstery not only on looks, but also on how intensively the sofa will be used.

How much space does a lounge sofa need?

Because a lounge sofa is deeper than an ordinary one, it pays to measure carefully in advance. Allow at least 110 cm of legroom in front of the sofa instead of the usual 90 cm. In living rooms from roughly 22 m² a lounge sofa comes into its own. Pair the sofa with a coffee table that is slightly higher than standard, so you can reach your coffee easily while you are stretched out.

Comfort and support

The soft, deep seat is wonderful to sink into, but it does not give everyone the same support. If you have back trouble or prefer to sit upright, choose a firmer model or add extra back cushions. That way you keep the comfort that suits you. A lounge sofa is ideal for the occasional overnight guest, but if you want to sleep on it permanently a proper sofa bed is the better choice.
