Rugs
A rug defines your seating area, softens sound and brings texture and warmth to your interior. In our showroom in Enschede you see the rugs rolled out in real room settings: under dining tables, in front of sofas and in seating areas, styled with wabi-sabi, hotel chic and modern furniture. That way you judge colour, size and feel right next to the furniture that will sit alongside them.

Which material suits you
Wool is the premium choice: soft underfoot, insulating, naturally dirt repellent and stable in shape under heavy furniture. Wool also absorbs sound, welcome in tall rooms. Jute is the wabi-sabi choice, an earthy, coarsely textured natural fibre that looks wonderful under a wooden live-edge table or beside a leather sofa. Sisal is robust and suited to busy areas, anti-static and low in dust. Polyester and polypropylene are affordable and easy to look after, with stains you remove using a damp cloth. Heatset polypropylene, as used in our Abol and Ace lines, imitates the texture of wool and is stain repellent and suited to daily use.
Which size should you choose
Choose a rug that is 30 to 60 cm larger than the seating area for visual balance. Under a 2-seater sofa 160 by 230 cm works, under a 3-seater 200 by 300 cm and under a large corner sofa 240 by 340 cm or more. In a seating area the rule of thumb is that at the very least all the front legs of the sofas stand on the rug. Keep 20 to 30 cm of free space between the rug and the wall. If you are unsure, bring your room measurements along and our advisers will think it through with you.
Made-to-measure rugs
If no standard size fits, we have the rug made for you. Over 250 rugs in our collection are available made to measure, accurate to the centimetre. On the product page you pick a shape, enter your dimensions and see the price straight away.
There are 7 shapes to choose from: round, rectangle, rounded corners, oval, organic, organic mirrored and pebble. Sizes run from 60 cm up to 400 by 600 cm. The price is calculated per square metre and starts at 80 euro per m2 for a rectangle or a round rug. Cut shapes such as oval, rounded corners and organic cost more, because the edge is finished by hand. A rug of 200 by 300 cm is 6 m2, so at the entry rate that comes to 480 euro.
A made-to-measure rug is produced especially for you and has a lead time of 6 to 8 weeks. Standard sizes are in stock and arrive within 1 to 2 weeks. We offer made-to-measure on Karpi, Mart Visser and Riviera Maison.
Rugs in wabi-sabi style
A wabi-sabi rug lies flat on the floor and never up against the wall. Work with earthy tones such as cream, taupe, warm grey or soft terracotta and avoid crisp geometric patterns, high gloss and cold white tones. The materials should be soft to the eye and to the hand. Combine a jute or wool rug with a suar wood live-edge table, a bouclé armchair in taupe and stoneware accessories. Imperfect edges, light wear and natural greying are part of it: treat them as patina, not as faults.
Care and anti-slip
Vacuum regularly with a soft brush, on a lower setting for wool. Blot stains dry straight away. On hard or smooth floors, certainly with thinner rugs, an anti-slip underlay is advisable so the rug stays neatly in place. That goes doubly for sisal and jute on a smooth floor.
Why buy your rug at Mokana
In our home store at Hogelandsingel 49 in Enschede you can lay the wool or jute you have chosen on the showroom floor to judge the scale properly. Bring a photo of your living room, a piece of your flooring and a colour sample of your sofa or curtains, and we will match colour and size together. For customers from Hengelo, Oldenzaal, Borne, Haaksbergen, Almelo and Losser the showroom is a short drive away, with free parking right outside.
What else works well
A round rug looks good under a round dining table or in a separate seating area, while in rectangular rooms rectangular models usually remain the more logical choice. Round off your scheme with our other wabi-sabi furniture and stoneware home decoration as the finishing touch.
