This sculpture captures the essence of the elephant in a single, powerful image. The solid head with wide-spread ears, detailed tusks and a gracefully curled trunk that reaches down to the base has been hand-carved from solid teak wood by experienced woodcarvers in Indonesia. The trunk winds naturally downward and rests on the round wooden plinth: an anatomical detail that gives the piece liveliness and movement.

The sculpture stands on a thick disc of solid teak wood, which in turn rests on a sturdy wooden pallet base. This combination of rough and refined, the polished carving on the untreated pallet, gives the whole a gallery-like presentation reminiscent of a museum artwork on a plinth.

The craftsmanship in detail

What makes this sculpture special is the way the woodcarver has made use of the natural properties of the teak wood. The grain in the wood follows the folds of the elephant's skin, the natural cracks reinforce the texture of the ears, and the colour variations, from warm honey blond to deep golden brown, give the sculpture an organic depth that could never be achieved with paint or other materials. Every cut has been made by hand, which is visible in the expressive detailing of the wrinkles around the eyes and the folds in the trunk.

Is this sculpture handmade?

Yes, this elephant head is entirely hand-carved from solid teak wood by experienced craftsmen on Java, Indonesia. The carving takes weeks: every detail, from the folds in the ears to the wrinkles of the trunk, is individually carved.
