What is a box spring bed and how is it built up
A box spring bed consists of a sprung base (the box), a mattress on top and usually a headboard. That double springing, first the box and then the mattress, gives that distinctive floating and supportive lying comfort. Because you lie higher than in a traditional bed, getting in and out is easier. A plain box with mattress is the basic form; if you want more luxury, choose a version with a thicker topper or an electrically adjustable model.
Choosing the right size
Start with the width. A box spring bed for two people is often built up from two separate halves, which is welcome because each person can choose their own mattress and firmness. Also think about the length: choose a bed at least fifteen to twenty centimetres longer than the tallest sleeper, so nothing gets in your way. Measure your bedroom too, including the space around the bed and the turning circle at the door, so the whole sits comfortably and you can still open the wardrobes properly.
Version and headboard
The headboard largely determines the look of your bedroom. A clean, low panel looks modern, while a tall, buttoned headboard adds warmth and class. Match the upholstery to the rest of your interior: a warm neutral colour combines with almost anything, while a darker tone gives more depth. Combine your box spring bed with matching bedside tables in the same spirit for a calm, coherent whole.
Care and use
A box spring bed asks for little maintenance, but a few habits keep it beautiful for longer. Rotate or turn the mattress periodically so the filling settles evenly, and air the bed regularly by turning the duvet back for a while. Keep a fabric headboard fresh by vacuuming it gently now and then with a soft brush. Blot stains with a slightly damp cloth, always working from the outside in, so no rings appear.
Why buy your box spring bed at Mokana
In our furniture store in Enschede you experience the box spring beds as they really are: you lie on them for a moment, feel the springing and see how the fabric and the wood look in the light. That trial lie prevents a wrong purchase, because a bed is bought for years. We give personal advice on size, firmness and version, deliver with our own delivery service right into the bedroom and deliver throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Payment in instalments is also possible, so you can choose today what lies best.
What else goes beautifully with a box spring bed
Round off your bedroom with furniture that carries the calm of your bed through. Think matching bedside tables for your lamp and book, a sideboard or chest of drawers in the same tone and a mirror or home accessory that completes the mood. That way you turn your bedroom into one coherent whole rather than separate pieces. Our interior consultants in Enschede are happy to think along about the right combination.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a double box spring bed often consist of two halves?
Two separate halves let each sleeper choose their own mattress and firmness. That increases comfort and also makes the bed easier to carry into the bedroom.
Which box spring bed length do I need?
Choose a bed at least fifteen to twenty centimetres longer than the tallest sleeper. That way you are never cramped and the comfort is preserved.
Can I try a box spring bed first?
Yes. In our showroom at Hogelandsingel 49 in Enschede you can lie on the models and experience the springing, the fabric and the headboard live before you decide.
How do I care for a box spring bed with a fabric headboard?
Vacuum the headboard gently now and then with a soft brush and air the bed regularly. Blot stains with a slightly damp cloth, working from the outside in.
