This Waterval tree trunk table is not a piece of furniture in the usual sense of the word, it is a wooden sculpture. The 10 cm thick solid suar wood top runs uninterrupted down both sides to touch the floor, so the wood forms its own base. No steel legs, no mechanical joints, just one continuous piece of wood that carries itself. A remarkable piece of craftsmanship that is only possible with the largest, oldest suar trees.

One piece of wood, one vision

The top is cut from a single ancient suar tree, with the natural shape of the trunk and root section fully preserved. On the sides, the organic live edges with all their openings, cavities and curved contours have been left intact, which reinforces the sculptural character. The dramatic wood grain with deep dark cores and lighter sapwood sections creates a lively play that recalls flowing water, giving the name Waterval added meaning.

Suar wood, the Indonesian monkeypod

Suar wood, better known internationally as monkeypod or botanically Albizia saman, is a tropical hardwood that grows mainly on Java and in other parts of Indonesia. The tree can reach an age of more than a hundred years and yields wide trunks that lend themselves perfectly to single-piece design tables. The wood combines light caramel tones in the sapwood with deeper chocolate brown shades in the heartwood, often with a dramatic contrast within the same plank. Suar is moreover stable, hard-wearing and resistant to temperature fluctuations, provided it is protected from direct sunlight and large changes in humidity.

Sculptural centrepiece

The Waterval is not a table that blends unobtrusively into an interior, it asks for space and attention. Place it as a statement in an entrance, lounge, showroom, gallery, or as a sculptural dining table in a minimalist architectural interior. The wood shows itself at its best against a neutral or dark background such as slate, concrete, or plaster in a deep tone, with indirect lighting from above that makes the wood grain glow. Combining it with Japandi, wabi-sabi or architectural modernism is entirely natural. For a dining table setting, stools or light design chairs can be placed along both long sides, although this piece is equally suited as a bar table, console or work table.

Maintenance

Suar wood is naturally stable and strong, provided it is well maintained. We advise wiping it dry with a soft cloth and removing stains immediately with a lightly damp cloth. Treating it once every six to twelve months with a neutral furniture oil keeps the wood in optimal condition and enhances the natural wood grain. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and do not place hot or very damp objects directly on the top, use coasters for warm dishes and glasses.
