Dining chairs
You sit in a dining chair longer than you think, and a set of six is a real purchase. Worth trying before buying.
Arms, castors or neither
Armrests are comfortable for long dinners but need clearance: check that they slide under your tabletop, because a chair that cannot be tucked away steals a walkway. Castors make a chair easy to move on hard floors and are common on the more relaxed models. A swivel base suits a round table, where you turn towards whoever is talking.
Leather or fabric
Leather wipes clean, which around a dining table is not a small thing. Fabric is warmer to sit on and offers far more colour. If you have young children, a tight-woven fabric with a stain treatment or a corrected-grain leather will save you grief.
