At 10 centimetres thick, the top of this tree trunk table is remarkably heavy and robust. The suar wood: tropical hardwood with a story

Suar wood: internationally known as monkeypod or raintree (Albizia saman): grows in the tropical forests of Indonesia into imposing trees of 40 metres high with trunks that sometimes reach three metres wide. It is precisely that width that makes tree trunk tables of this calibre possible: a single solid slab from the heart of the tree, without glued joints or composite parts. The colour palette of suar wood is remarkably varied: from cream-coloured sapwood to deep chestnut-brown heartwood, often with dramatic transitions within the same top.

Technically, suar wood is a reliable choice for large furniture. The interlocking grain structure makes the wood dimensionally stable: it moves, cracks and warps less than many comparable wood species. With a Janka hardness of 900 lbf it is sturdy enough for daily use as a dining table, and the natural resistance to wood rot and insects ensures that the piece lasts for generations. Moreover, suar wood is not an endangered species: the trees grow quickly and are harvested responsibly in managed areas.

The double root leg: craftsmanship at the highest level

A waterfall tree trunk table with a single root leg is already rare: a specimen with two root legs is exceptional. The craftsman must select a trunk in which both the top and bottom have a usable root structure with sufficient mass to function as a table leg. After felling and sawing, a drying process of several months follows. Each root leg is then cleaned by hand: loose bark is removed, but the organic shapes, cavities and passages in the wood are deliberately left intact. The result is two load-bearing sculptures that give the table an almost animal-like presence.
